Improvement of Food Security, Water Access, and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in Vulnerable Communities of Magude – Phase II
As part of the M50 project, implemented in the Magude District, Maputo Province, over a three-year period (2021 to 2024), Kulima empowered eight agricultural associations to achieve improved living conditions through the development of the agricultural sector.
Actions to diversify livelihoods were promoted, and one of the innovations that brought visible and significant results was the introduction of the drip irrigation system, which led to increased agricultural production and productivity within the communities. This included the provision of production inputs, training families in creating seed banks, and constructing improved Gorongosa-type granaries for seed and grain storage for use during times of scarcity. Additionally, they were trained in nutrition and market access for the distribution of their produce.
Beyond the agricultural associations, other groups were formed and directly impacted by the project’s activities. These included water and sanitation committees, natural resource management committees, environmental clubs, water and sanitation nuclei, nutritional promoters, agricultural promoters, and beekeepers.
The project was funded by MADRE CORAJE and BOSQUE y COMUNIDAD, in partnership with the district government through its district services, and involved local stakeholders in its execution.
